How to Participate in the Del Mar Bluff Stabilization Hearing

The Coastal Commission will hold a hearing on the San Diego Association of Government's proposal to grade and armor the bluffs in Del Mar on Wednesday, June 8. Participation details for the community are below.

What - The Coastal Commission will be reviewing SANDAG's project proposal for consistency with the Coastal Act. Coastal Commission staff will present their staff report and recommended vote, and then the public will have an opportunity to comment. While federal consistency determinations somewhat limit the Commission's ability to alter projects (the project receives federal review first), Commissioners still have the opportunity to apply conditions to the project such that it can meet the requirements of the California Coastal Act. In the staff report for this item, staff has already recommended a set of conditions they suggest be required in order to find that the project is consistent with this state law. See the Conditions in the staff report linked above.

When - Wednesday, June 8 beginning at 9 AM. This item will likely be heard around 10 AM or later. You can follow along by watching the livestream. The agenda item is 7b.

Sign Up to Comment Verbally - Members of the public can comment in person or online. You can sign up to speak by clicking the 'Submit Speaker Request' button on this page and indicating whether you'd like to speak in person or via zoom on Item W7b. You must submit your request by 5 PM on Tuesday June 7 in order to speak virtually or to show a presentation as part of your in person comments on Wednesday. If you show up to the hearing in person on Wednesday but do not have presenter materials, you can also sign up to speak when you get to the meeting. Surfrider is confirming how much time speakers will have per comment but it is likely to be 2 minutes. We will update that info here before the meeting.

Submitting a Letter by 5 PM This Friday - To provide written comments that will get posted to the Coastal Commission agenda website and be available to the public and Commissioners in advance, email your comment letter by 5 PM Friday June 3 to EORFC@coastal.ca.gov with the title 'Public Comment on June 2022 Agenda Item Wednesday 7b - CC-0005-21 (San Diego Association of Governments, San Diego Co.)'

Surfrider will be following up with our letter and suggested talking points to be linked here. For a video presentation of SANDAG's proposal, watch SANDAG's May 25, 2022 presentation to Del Mar's Design Review Board. This will also be presented to the Del Mar City Council on Monday June 6 (agenda and link will be posted here.)
