Greetings, Coastal Advocates!
It has been a busy fall in the policy world. Last week, we attended the California Coastal Commission meeting in San Francisco and provided input and comments on several important topics. Additionally, we are tracking the latest activity at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and have met with Southern California Edison in order to glean more information about their safety procedures and extreme hazard risks. Read on for more information.
But first, a moment of solidarity and silence for all those impacted by the recent wildfires throughout California. Here are a few ideas as to how you can help.

San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station (SONGS) Update
- On August 3, 2018, a canister loaded with spent nuclear fuel got caught on an inner ring while being loaded into an onsite, coastal dry storage structure at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, and almost dropped 18 feet. This “near-miss” triggered an onsite inspection by a federal oversight agency, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Here is our recent blog with more information.
- The NRC presented results of an investigation of the incident during an online webinar last Thursday. Here is a write-up on the webinar, from the San Diego Union Tribune. We plan to post a follow up blog, shortly. Stay tuned!
