Summer isn’t over yet and neither is the 2022 state legislative session! Take a quick break from the sunshine and south swells to demand that California legislators protect our beloved coast and ocean before the clock runs out on August 31.
AB 1857 would change the credit for incinerated trash at local municipalities to be counted as disposal rather than diversion. Burning trash is energy intensive, emits harmful pollution, and is the opposite of diverting waste through source reduction, recycling or composting programs. Low-income and BIPOC communities are disproportionately impacted by these facilities – on top of already existing pollution issues community members face on a daily basis. AB 1857 would close down the last two remaining waste incinerators and move California into creating more equitable zero waste communities.
We need your help right now to pass AB 1857. Please urge your representatives today to vote YES on this bill.
Fund Coastal Act Enforcement Now
All residents of and visitors to California are legally able to enjoy the state’s beaches, thanks to the California Coastal Act and the agency charged with enforcing it: the California Coastal Commission. Unfortunately, due to decades of underfunding of the Commission’s Enforcement Division, nearly 3,000 recorded violations of the Coastal Act have yet to be resolved, jeopardizing both our coast and equitable access to it.
These violations can carry enormous consequences and include blocked access, as well as illegal destruction of wetlands, sensitive habitats, and archaeological and cultural resources sacred to California’s Native American Tribes.
To resolve this crisis, please send a message to Governor Newsom asking him to allocate $10 million of the state’s $47 billion discretionary budget surplus to the Coastal Commission enabling its enforcement division to clear this violation backlog.
Join us in making sure our coast is protected and accessible to all!
