Action Alert! Save Long Beach from new Belmont Aquatic Center on the Beach

Tell the Coastal Commission: Preserve our Beach, as a Beach! The City of Long Beach wants to replace the old Belmont pool with a giant “Belmont Beach and Aquatics Center” on the same site - ON THE BEACH (!) - driven mostly by nostalgic memories of the Olympics and other aquatics competitions at the old pool. But times have changed since 1968. Beach access and vistas are now protected by the Coastal Act. And sea level rise poses serious threats to the site and surrounding area. Sign the action alert now and tell the Coastal Commission to deny this project!

Managed Retreat from Erosion and Sea Level Rise at Gleason Beach

"With the realities of climate change looming ever closer, California transportation officials are now moving a key stretch of highway more than 350 feet inland — one of the first major efforts by the state to relocate, or 'manage retreat,' critical infrastructure far enough from the coast to make room for the next 100 years of sea level rise." Read on for the full LA Times story about a new managed retreat project at Gleason Beach in Sonoma County!

New Vision for Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument in Santa Cruz County

"The vision is 26.5 miles of trails for hikers, bikers and equestrians on the 5,843 acres under public ownership. The Amah Mutsun Land Trust, a tribal organization representing Indigenous people that originally occupied the land is determined to bring their historical stewardship 'back to the California Coast'”. We support this vision and the continued move toward increased public access and recreation! Check out the full story in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Paris Climate Agreement

America’s RSVP to participate in the Paris Climate Agreement was officially withdrawn by President Trump—making the U.S. the only major county not involved with the historic, global agreement. Fortunately, President elect Joe Biden, who was declared the winner of the presidential race over the weekend, has vowed to renew America’s commitment to the imperative climate change agreement. Read on how we can make up for lost time and protect our oceans!
