Written by msackett | Mar 10, 2017 10:37:28 PM

Hey folks!

Here's another update - lots happening this week!

Policy Manager, Jennifer Savage, spent the latter part of the week in Ventura for the Coastal Commission hearing (more on that below) and, well, we kinda love #Ventura. Okay, we totally love Ventura!

Event Alert // Hands Across the Sand

Mark your calendar for Hands Across the Sand on May 20! Standing against new oil drilling is imperative! (And while it takes more than a day at the beach, a day at the beach is pretty awesome!) Find a beach near you to participate#protectwhatyoulove

News Alert // Oil Drilling in Hermosa Beach

FANTASTIC work by our activists and all who worked to protect Hermosa Beach! Glad to see this issue finally wrapped up - for good!

"The prospect of oil drilling in Hermosa Beach has had a long and rocky road since 1984, when voters approved the removal of a ban in the city. When E&B wanted to drill in the city's maintenance yard, residents came out in force and voted 80-20 percent against Measure O in March 2015, which would have allowed E&B to drill." Read more here.

Action Alert // CEMEX

End the California Sand Rush! Email California State Lands Commissioners Gavin Newsom, Betty Yee and Michael Cohen and ask them to join the fight:

Policy Update // Desalination

Heads up! Jordan Cunningham introduces Assembly bill to explore use of Diablo desal plant – reported in SLO Tribune last week.

Policy Update // Coastal Commission

The Coastal Commission approved the final phase of the restoration of Crystal Cove State Park. Commission staff, State Parks and the Crystal Cove Alliance worked tirelessly to develop a project that will benefit the public and honor the historic nature of the location. This project will double the number of cottages available and includes a significant lower cost accommodations component with a hostel style dorm and a youth educational program. Overall a win for coastal access in Southern California! Click here for more details from the LA Times.

Also at the March Coastal Commission hearing was an excellent presentation by Joel Cesare on StokeShare's One Watershed program at today's California Coastal Commission meeting – s/o to Surfrider / West Los Angeles / Malibu and all our activists who work to connect children with the ocean, creating future stewards of our earth. <3
